So much more than veggies!

By fallspark, June 3rd, 2016 | No Comments »

ae222f76-ffea-4432-ae8e-0d0ec6541657If you haven’t been to the Falls Park Farmers Market yet this season, you haven’t been to the market! We’ve expanded and have several great new vendors (as well as all of your old favorites). Our North Addition has opened with new vendors including Heart of the City Gluten Free Bakery, Sweetgrass Soaps, Double L Bison and Coffea Rosteria. And we still have great veggies imported from places like Lincoln County, South Dakota, Pipestone, Minnesota and Hull, Iowa.

Or perhaps you like a fresh wood-fired pizza, lots of home-made baked goodies or some hand-crafted pies? The Falls Park Farmers Market is much more than just veggies. Did we mention flowers and bedding plants? Oh my… you’ll need to bring the big car.

Right now we’ve got a huge variety of salad greens too, all fresh and locally grown. So lettuce help you stock up on all of your favorite veggies, plants and goodies. We’ll take that challenge head on. Leaf it to us. Ok, we’re done. See you this Saturday!

Spinach is usually available in May and throughout the summer. It is known as one of the world’s healthiest foods! It is packed full of nutrients and protein!

Oyster mushrooms are low in calories and rich in nutrition. Their absorbent qualities make them perfect for soups, sauces, and marinating for the grill!

When choosing broccoli, look for a bright green color and avoid yellow flowerets. The broccoli should be tender but firm with compact clusters of flowerets.

What Does Buying Local Mean For You?

f66bc2c6-af81-4986-b359-5ff7c8091cd8Shopping at the Falls Park Farmers Market supports local farmers, vendors and crafters, but what does it mean for you?

For starters, you get to enjoy garden-fresh produce without getting your hands dirty; leave that to our farmers. Not to mention you know it’s local and you know who it came from. Go ahead – ask our farmers about how your spinach was grown, where your asparagus was picked, when your radishes were harvested – you can’t do that at a supermarket.

There’s also the simple pleasure of shopping outside, strolling from vendor to vendor and getting your goods directly from the person who created them. It’s buying natural, in nature.

And since the Falls Park Farmers Market is the largest market around, you can get everything you need in one stop, from a wide selection of produce, to locally raised meats, to freshly baked pies and other baked goods. It’s everything a market should be.

So do yourself a favor and buy local at the Falls Park Farmers Market this Saturday from 8am-1pm.

Even though turnip roots are the most popular part to eat, fresh turnip greens have even more nutritious value – they’re rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals!

Cucumbers can be sliced or pickled; both ways are delicious. Half a cup of sliced cucumber contains more than 10% of the vitamin K needed daily!

Kale is very trendy recently and for good reason! Kale is packed full of vitamins A, C and K. It also contains Lutein which keeps your vision healthy!

We’re excited to bring you another season of fresh produce and local products, all spring and summer long!

The timing couldn’t be better. As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers,” and we’ll have plenty to choose from tomorrow, from potted and bedding plants, to flowers and grasses. And feel free to ask our vendors any questions you may have about gardening; after all, they are experts, and they’ll be happy to give you some tips!

Of course we’ll have some early spring produce including lettuce, radishes and turnips, not to mention meats, pasta, cheese, and hot wood-fired pizza.

Whether you’re looking for plants for your garden, fresh produce or just a little fun this weekend, the Falls Park Farmers Market has everything you need, this Saturday at Falls Park from 8am to 1pm.

Asparagus is generally available in May and June. Fresh asparagus is a good source of anti-oxidants and is rich in folates, and Vitamins C, A and E!

Radishes are usually here in May and keep coming all summer. Sliced radishes are a great low-calorie snack with about 19 calories per cup!
